Leprosy
Leprosy is
an infectious and chronic disease that affects mostly the skin,
the peripheral nerves, the mucous membrane and the eyes. The physical
mutations caused by the disease result in an exclusion of lepers
in society. In most cases those who are affected by leprosy are
not able to afford any kind of medical help.
Leprosy can be cured nowadays with the very effective medication
MDT. The disease
still exists in very poor countries especially in Asia, Africa and
South America.
Recent surveys
by the WHO
(2002) showed that there are at least 620.000
new leprosy cases every year worldwide. This number
only represents the recorded cases and not those who have not been
detected or are hiding.
